Hi, I'm from Australia and was traveling through Europe for around 20 months. While in France I had a recurring inflammatory condition that flared up so bad i could hardly walk. Julie took me to the local doctor, helped translate the language and buy the medicines and medical supplies I needed. Without her there I would have had to return to Australia to get the help i needed. Being in a foreign country where you don't speak the language and don't know anybody makes it so much harder. While in France I was having some health concerns and felt I should see a doctor and have some blood work done. Julie, knowing the area as well as its doctors, recommended one and took me to my appointment and translate, as I didn’t have the language skills required to describe specific symptoms in detail. I found it extremely reassuring that there was no room for miscommunication during the visit, as well as invaluable to have her explain how the medical system works in France when it came to details like payment, procedures at the doctors office, as well as how to actually go in to the lab at the local village and get the blood work done. Julie also helpfully went over the results of my blood test when the analysis arrived to make sure I was interpreting it correctly.
French is not my first language, and as someone who spent a fair amount of time living and working in France, I can vouch that it is quite helpful at first to have someone who is able to translate things like phone calls to the oil or roofing company. This will happily save you spending at least half an hour before hand looking up nouns like ”gutters”, ”tiles”, and “invoice” and double checking your tenses!
